Preparing Your Apprenticeship and Training Funds for DOL Audits
The Department of Labor ("DOL") is targeting Apprenticeship and Training Funds for audits. As part of a nationwide initiative, the DOL's Employee Benefit Security Administration has more than 200 active audits of apprenticeship funds. The DOL is scrutinizing the expenditures of apprenticeship funds to uncover any potential violations of ERISA's prohibited transaction rules and breaches of fiduciary duty. Once an audit is initiated, all of the apprenticeship fund's records, such as Form 5500s, office leasing arrangements, credit card and other expenditures, and expense policies, are subject to review and examination for reasonableness.
