U.S. Postal Service Must Turn Over Documents to Union on Deal with Staples
An Administrative Law Judge (“ALJ”) recently ordered that the U.S. Postal Service (“USPS”) must provide the American Postal Workers Union (“APWU”) with information the Union requested on the deal between the USPS and Staples, Inc. The Union filed an unfair labor practice because the USPS failed to provide information that it had requested regarding the confidential agreement between the Post Office and Staples, along with e-mails.
USPS has been trying to set up “mini Post Offices” in Staples stores across the country in the guise of cost savings. The ALJ’s ruling comes at a time when APWU is aggressively pushing the USPS to be transparent and protesting the USPS’s no-bid deal with Staples. The APWU has previously recovered a memo from USPS showing its intention to replace good union postal-worker jobs with low-paying Staples jobs.
